Aggregate Exported Canvas Files (For the CMGT Program)

Export from Canvas and Extract Files

  1. Open the course in Canvas and navigate to Settings.
  2. Select Export Course Content.
    1. If this is the first time you've exported the course, you will not see any files here. If you do see an export file, you can download it directly. Otherwise, your download will show up here when it is ready.
  3. Select the Export file to download it. This will take a little while.
  4. Once the course is downloaded, navigate to its location and change the extension from .imscc to .zip.
  5. Extract the .zip folder to your file directory.
  6. Move on to "Group the Files."

Group the Files

  1. Navigate to the folder and create a New Folder inside it. I've called it "All Files."
    1. You will be moving files into this folder, so set your workspace up to do this in a way that works for you. I will open the new folder in a new window so that I can drag my files over.
  2. In the parent file where your extracted files are housed, navigate to the Search area. In Windows, this is a bar near the top of the files window.
  3. Search for .xml and move all the found files to your new folder.
  4. Do the same for .html files.
    1. If you encounter an error about duplicate file names, opt to keep both files.
  5. Now you have a single folder that contains all of the .xml and .html files.
  6. Move on to "Use the Aggregator"

Use the Aggregator

  1. Select the Choose Files button and navigate to your new folder where you've collected the files.
  2. Select all the files in your new folder.
  3. Select Process Files to extract and format content.
  4. Once processing is complete, you may review the results.
  5. Select Copy Content to copy the formatted text and paste it into a Google Document.
